The marketing industry is a competitive one. As agencies, we compete for talent, we compete for new business, and we compete against each other to produce the best award-winning creative ideas. Competition is great – it pushes us to be smarter, more agile, and to ultimately create better work for our clients.
While competition is a healthy and necessary part of our business, sometimes it’s great to put the competitiveness aside and instead join forces for a great cause. For the Chicago ad community, that cause is the Off the Street Club (OTSC). OTSC, Chicago’s oldest boys and girls club, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to keep kids off the streets of the West Garfield Park neighborhood and away from drugs, gangs and violence.
The Chicago advertising community has been a long supporter of OTSC, dating back to the organization’s inception more than 100 years ago – with FCB as one of its first donors. One of the specific programs that FCB Chicago supports is the Save Our Summer (SOS) initiative. This initiative aims to send 600 Chicago youths to Camp Mathieu in Wheaton, Ill. each year to keep them safe and off the streets while they’re out of school for the summer.
This year, to rally our agency to get behind the cause and encourage participation in our fundraising efforts for the Save Our Summer Program, we brought summer camp to FCB and designated two weeks at the agency as “Camp FCB.” Activities included writing postcards to fellow FCB campers, a snack cart that came around daily, sports day where you could take a photo with Chicago Blackhawk’s Stanley Cup rings or a Heisman trophy, and an opportunity to sponsor other campers and activities through our “send a kid to camp” program.
Our fundraising efforts were wildly successful this year, doubling last year’s total and raising more than $13,000 for Off the Street Club. With this donation, as an agency, we were able to send 27 well-deserving young people to summer camp! We’re planning a day this summer to go out to Camp Mathieu and hang out with these wonderful kids and can’t wait!
